Australia bans graffiti game

Often you hear the expression “Only in America” when someone is surprised by the absurdity of something happening there. Sadly, I have to say “Only in Australia”:

Multimillionaire US fashion designer Marc Ecko has slammed the decision to ban the sale of his video game in Australia.

The Classification Review Board on Wednesday refused to classify the game, Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure, meaning it cannot be sold, demonstrated, hired or imported.

The decision was endorsed last night by the Federal Attorney-General, Philip Ruddock, who had asked the board to review of the game’s MA15+ classification after concerns were voiced that the game would promote graffiti.

In a land where you can get all manner of games, DVD, books and TV shows that are full of violence and have often been theorized as encouraging violent behaviour, the censor board is worried about the promotion of graffiti. I smell a rat.
