Blog Help: Destination vs Journey goals

I was thinking about my goals and the post, Towards 200 from two days ago about them. In it I mentioned my goal is $200 per week but then said that’s not really a goal because I don’t have a due date next to it. (I then listed my real goals)

It came to mind though, that even if I did, it’s a different type of goal, one that is dependent on what I do.

Many people say “My goal is to be a…” That’s all well and good, but it’s not going to come to you by just sitting on your butt.

Hence I realised there’s two type of goals: Destination and Journey.

If all you ever make are destination goals, you’ll never achieve anything. You must make the journey goals, i.e. the goals that are the work required to reach your destination goal.

So when you’re setting your goals for your blog, it is okay to say “I’m gunna be making $10,000 per month within 12 months” but make sure you lay down all the goals required to get there. eg, 10 posts per day, 10 compatible sites with links back to your’s etc

Having only a destination will take you no where, but a journey will always take you somewhere.

Nice clarification of the difference between journey VS destination goals. I’d thought about it before, but never heard it stated clearly like that.

Thanks, man! (If you’re a man.) Re-reading that post it was suprisingly profound. Reminds me of that Simpsons ep with the comet, where when Lisa points out Homer was right he says “Yeah, I know, I’m scared too.”

Yanyway! Just looked at your site GREAT idea! I’d been thinking about something like that last year but just didn’t have the time. I like the way you’ve implemented it using forums.

I’ll see what I can do to promote it.
