Blog help: Getting back on the horse and recovering momentum

Hopefully you didn’t notice that I was away for a few days. Before I left I pre-posted and post-dated the posts. Therefore, each day, a new post should magically have appeared on each of QwertyRash, Go Play AV and CrossOSS.

Now comes the tough part. Getting the habit back.

You’d think it would be easy. But not for me. If I take a break from anything - even a couple of days - it becomes an effort to get rolling again, to regain the momentum. Fortunately I had that goal I’d set to nag away at me, and so here I now sit.

Any sort of break from your blog is dangerous and before you go away it’s good to have a plan of how you are going to get started again.

Something I could have - and should have - done is to half write the post for the first day back. Not wholly write - that just prolongs the break. If I’d have written, it would have eased me back into it.

So try half writing return posts before you next time take a break. It’s sure to make the return that bit easier.

It worked. Your posts appeared here as planned. I’m new to Wordpress and don’t know all the ins and outs of it. Am I understanding you correctly? If I just postdate a post, it won’t be published until that date arrives?

In regards to starting posts for later, it helps me a lot. If I have nothing to work with, it takes me a lot longer to get something written, so I started saving my ideas as drafts, so when I go to write an actual post, if something isn’t burning to get out, I go through the drafts and find one that has jelled enough in my mind to make something real out of it. Since I started doing this, I’m able to post more consistently as well as more frequently (though not up to your post a day pledge, though).

Yeah - spot on Rick. I use Ecto for blogging, but post-dating works the same in the WordPress admin.

Also, consistency, which you have achieved, is more important than frequency. Blog readers like to know when to expect posts. They like developing reading habits. For instance ifyou only post on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they’ll get into the habit of looking for and expecting your posts on those days.
