Blog tips - Blog power

A commenter on Performancing.com wrote “most of us who have serious web sites do not necessarily wish to clog it with a blog, which is usually, (but not always) a personal journal;”

This set me thinking and I replied with the following:

Six months ago I had the same perception of blogs. But the blog model can - and should - be applied to any website. If you have dynamic content, the blog model is an ideal method to communicate.

Any website with dynamic content can benefit from the blog model. eg Look at all the product blogs. They’re not personal journals or commentary. And really, all sites could have dynamic content. Thus any site that is not blogging is doing themselves a disservice

Blogs aren’t just for some wannabe, opinionated git. Blogs are for any site that wants to increase traffic and be seen as dynamic, progressive and pro-active. Any business that wants to convey that image should consider re-developing their website into a blog-centric one.

Of course, if all your content is static, then stick to the traditional model.

This doesn’t mean never the twain shall meet. Traditional sites have long had dynamic information, such as news pages, and blogs can have reams of static pages full of information. It’s just the starting point that changes. And it’s not about tacking a blog onto an existing site. Instead you’d rebuild it around the blog model.

The only catch with a blog model though is you have to have someone to keep up the information flow - although there are some tricks you can employ, such as only showing the month of posting on articles, not the full date. But the commitment will pay.

Finally, every site has two simple goals, to get traffic and to get return traffic. I’ve been in IT for many years and in the last ten, that has included helping develop websites for organizations I’ve worked for. Now that I understand the potential of blogging, I’d say I’ve never seen such a powerful tool as blogging, for bringing traffic to *any* site and keeping it.
