Blog tips - Favicons - developing your blog’s identity

Peter Brady over at Performancing discussed the merits of favicons the other day. I was a bit late to the party, but posted a reply anyway and I’ve duplicated it here, because favicons are important. Read Peter’s post to find out more about what a favicon is.

It’s the little things…
How many times you heard that “It’s the little things that make all the difference.” ?

So it is with favicons. Ypu probably don’t even realize how often you rely on them. As earlier posters pointed out, in bookmarks, RSS feed lists, browser tabs etc.

Also, you will see a business’s logo more often in a favicon than anywhere else on the net. If you are at their page, it is always there in front of you. eg The Performacing logo appears five times on my screen at the moment, yet not once is it visible in the section of the web page I’m viewing. All five are favicons (four in tabs and one in the address bar)

It’s quite ironic that I read this post now. I have accumulated 19 open pages in NetNewsWire that I have to read and/or process. Just before reading this one, I noticed that four of the (visible) pages were from Performancing. I smiled and thought - “these guys must write quality stuff, since I’ve got so many of their pages open”. Now there’s only 5 letters visible in each tab, so it was the favicon that identified them as Performancing. There’s four with no favicon, which I quite consciously categorized as less important (even though they might not be) and they slightly irritate me because I’ll have to go to each tab to see how important it is. And one from PC Magazine, which I immediately know is very important (since they’re a great source of reviews for one of my sites).

All that information came to me from a 1 second scan of the favicons in the tabs of the open pages in NetNewsWire.

It’s the little things…

When you’re ready to create one for yourself, get your logo and head over to Favicons from Pics
