FT.com | Massachusetts State to drop MS Office
In a blow to Microsoft, the US state of Massachusetts has proposed open formats for all documents created or saved by employees of the state, hence alienating MS Office.
“The proposal, which is open for comment until the end of next week before it takes effect, would represent a big boost for open source software such as Open Office, which is created by volunteer programmers and made available free of charge.”
Microsoft, in a move planned to counter action such as this, have applied for the Office document formats to be recognised as open standards.
