HomeOfficeVoice | Content Theft, Copyright & Plagiarism in the Blogosphere
The HomeOfficeVoice raise very valid concerns about uncredited use of blog material. I’ve posted my own thoughts there and will repeat them here:
Sadly, the internet has allowed the perpetuation of the myth that everything should be free. People nowadays have an expectation that if it’s on the internet it should be freely available for anyone to use how they like. There are people who vociferously defend the right to copy music via P2P.
Now we bloggers are beginning to discover how musicians and software developers felt when their music and programs were pirated.
We can’t just fight for the copyright of our material. We must stand up against all breaches of copyright - music, software, movies, content etc.

Chris, thanks for dropping by and commenting and writing it up at your own blog.
You actually hit it on the head: the expectation now (and really always has been) is that everything on the internet should be free.
I’m hoping that myth will slowly change over time, but as you’d know some perceptions are hard to overcome (especailly those that deal with freebies)
You are also right when we must fight for all copyright breaches - it would be quite hypocritical to do otherwise. I’m the first to admit that I’m no angel in this regard … although I haven’t pirated anything for a number of years, and I’m 99% sure I don’t currently use any pirated software … better check I guess
What about the opposite: blogging with the expectation that anything you blog can and will be taken and used elsewhere?
After all, that’s what the Creative Commons license that protect my blog allows for. I’m perfectly fine with people using my writing for whatever purposes they have.
Not all of us are so eager to defend our copyrights, y’know.
ketsugi, I don’t disagree, but sadly many people feel things like open source, creative commons, freeware etc means everything should be freely available.
