A bit of everything: blogging, technology, writing, musings, sport and humor

Journal of a new blogger: Part 2 - Oh the technology!

Last week was the sort of week you get when you decide you are going to do something new. Everything conspires against you! But if you’re serious, you will survive those weeks, albeit feeling like you’ve taken one step back.

I had been working hard to get discussion forums up and running for my cricket blog as the cricket series in England was in its last days. I had been participating on the cricket forum of the TV station that broadcast the cricket, but no one knew whether the forum would continue. So, seeing an opportunity I set up my own.

On the last night, I began promoting it there and got a couple of registrations. And then it all went belly up for near a whole day. Right when I needed it to be working most, it wasn’t. It’s kinda like opening a new store and on opening day having no electricity. My host had troubles with their database server.

Eventually things came back to normal.

And then a couple of days later, it went down again - and for longer. In fact the whole site was down. Again, server troubles.

In between I’d had a job interview (which I didn’t get) to distract me some more.

By the end of the week I’d done no blogging in 5 days. Might not sound long, but you lose your momentum. I was wondering if it was all worth it. What if this happened regularly? I could change hosts but how to know that who I changed to would be any more reliable? And I like my host.

These events put a dampener on my enthusiasm. Technology does. I know technology, it was my job, but sometimes you just want it to work.

Managing your own blog as I do, as opposed to a managed blog like Blogger.com, takes you much closer to the technology.

You need to decide which way you want to go.
