New iMovie no Apple plot to harvest your hard-earned

There’s been silly talk around the place that Apple’s new iMovie, which has a revolutionary new editing interface but is missing many important features of its predecessor, is in fact a sneaky plot by Apple to force people who want to make movies on Macs to buy Final Cut Express (Apple’s pro-sumer movie editing app).

This is nonsense. FUD actually.

If this was true, then Apple would not be willing to add any new features to iMovie ever, because as it improved, it would cannabalize those new FCE sales.

iMovie ‘08 is a version 1.0 product. It’s easy to forget that as it took over the iMovie name.

Yes, currently iMovie should be called iClip, but Apple will add missing features in due course, restoring iMovie’s as a complete consumer movie editing application.

Although I do hope Apple doesn’t dawdle. I don’t really want to have to wait ’til ‘09 for features such as timeline indicators, bookmarks, chapter markers, themes, audio and video effects, and audio volume waveform editing.

I should also point, the iMovie installation retains the previous version of iMovie on your system.
