Andy Hagan provides an interesting and challenging article on build links with other websites.

“I think it’s worth remembering: Before you put in a bunch of effort going after the rankings, make sure you have something valuable and linkworthy, or you’re just working against yourself.”

Links are vital as Google’s rating algorithm is based on the popularity of the sites linking to you. So, basically, the more popular sites that link to you, the closer to the top of Google results you’ll appear. That is an over-simplification as there’s some pretty highbrow math behind it, but you get picture.

Of course, the other way to get high in Google listings is niche blogging. Again he provides good dissection on that.
