WordPress Review: Five Minutes with WordPress 2.0 Beta 1
Well I downloaded and installed WordPress 2.0 beta 1 (formerly known as WordPress 1.6). The following is a five minute review of it. I’ve just gone for a quick surf through the admin menus and given my impressions. I cannot guarantee I didn’t miss anything blatantly obvious, or obscure.

Five Minutes with WordPress 2 beta 1
• Installation: Easy although had to manually create database and wp-config because of domain host write access problems
• First impression: Admin screens: Nice blues. Same menus
• First impression: blog site: Same Kubrick theme. No new themes yet
• Dashboard: No change
• Write: Image upload added. Visual redesign. The screenshot below shows the top half of the Write Post page.
• Manage: No change
• Links: No change
• Presentation: Themes display a preview. Added Current theme options menu which can change font colors, gradient colors(!) of header only
• Plugins: Added WP database backup plug and Akismet comment anti spam plugin
• Users: Visual redesign. Permission levels are now roles and are textual names (Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor, Subscriber) etc) rather than numbers. Can set from Authors & Users
• Writing options: Use visual editor (not working in Safari or Opera 9 beta on my Mac. Firefox okay.)
• Permalinks options: 3 defaults to choose from plus custom
• Added Import menu. Imports RSS and Blogger
So there you have it. Not enough in there to justify a 2 upgrade. Here’s hoping below the surface are significant enhancements. Otherwise it really is WP1.6 as originally intended. But bear in mind, it was just a five minute review.
