Writing: Story telling

A provocative thought for you:
Good writers aren’t necessarily good story tellers;
And good storytellers aren’t necessarily good writers.

You’ve got to work on both. I recently read a short story by a professional writer of 20 years experience, yet it had deficiencies of both. There were obvious writing errors (eg assuming the reading knows something) and I *personally* didn’t consider the story was written right. The ending didn’t link well enough to the beginning and end.

Now, writing is hard to argue. In many cases it’s fairly black and white when you make a mistake - which does make improving your writing an easier process than improving your storytelling.

Storytelling though is somewhat subjective. Just because I didn’t like this particular story doesn’t mean I’m right. But an opinion is always worth considering. That said, there’s a lot more room in storytelling for creative expression than there is in writing, so you might just argue you were experimenting. :)
If someone tells you your story doesn’t make sense, don’t be defensive, give it due consideration.

Work on your writing, and consider opinions about your storytelling.

    Telling a story well is difficult. Writing well is hard. Putting the two together is an exercise in skill and creativity that can easily fall on its face. I don’t read much short fiction, mostly novels. Some of what I read makes me wonder how the author gets a contract, but they sell enough books that you must be right about the judgement being subjective.
