Wow! Finished my diploma of graphic design

Who’d have thought, eh? Me, a computer nerd of so many years with barely an artistic bone in my body, would complete a diploma in an artistic field. I still don’t know the difference between an Expressionist and an Impressionist, nor which came first, but fortunately an understanding of art history isn’t key to success in design.

But true enough, I somehow managed to get through - though the last few months were very hard.

So now what? What indeed.

First of all I’m going to clean up my desk. I always like to do that before I start a new phase.

What will that be? Employment opportunities are scarce for graphic designers where I live. That said, a graphic designer should be able to find a reasonable amount of freelance work no matter where they live.

I would like to blog more regularly again, plus resurrect some of my other blogs. I’d like to learn how to program for the iPhone. I’d like to go back an rewrite the book I wrote a few years back when I studied writing - it is only at first draft, so that’s a reasonable expectation. I would like to do some online study, probably through xTrain. I definitely should aim to enter several competitions a week on 99designs to maintain and improve my design skill. There are a couple of teaching opportunities next year. Plus, this year I have already done three websites for good money, and will continue to more of that. And I’ve got three others wanting me to stuff for them. Oh, speaking of websites, I really, really, really, really, must give this one a facelift and put my own design upon it. Oh dang, and I just remember I want to do some landscaping in the back yard.

Strewth! Looking at that lot I don’t have time to get a real job.

For anyone interested, here’s the sites I did this year, including my own:

Wangaratta High School Centenary
Smith’s of Glenrowan Cherry Orchards
Appin Park Primary School

Graphic design: Knowing when to lead.

A bit of a learning experience today.
As graphic design students, we submitted designs for a logo for a local organization. However, they didn’t really know what they were looking for, so needed us to lead, which we didn’t. So a fairly broad and open brief.
They’ve narrowed it down to three, but again, not knowing what […]
