Graphic design: Knowing when to lead.

A bit of a learning experience today.

As graphic design students, we submitted designs for a logo for a local organization. However, they didn’t really know what they were looking for, so needed us to lead, which we didn’t. So a fairly broad and open brief.

They’ve narrowed it down to three, but again, not knowing what they really want, we presented a variety of colour, typography and layout versions of those three. Now it’s up to them to choose one logo and hopefully a colour and the typography.

The lesson learned though is we should have led more assertively and gotten them at an earlier stage to define a definite colour palette, and a definite typography style. Thus, today the three of us could have presented one logo each, making their choice much easier.

Experienced designers have that confidence to lead the client when they, the client, aren’t sure themselves. But we’ll get there.

Now it flies! Well, it’s not […]
