A great quote about success and hard work

Saw this great quote in an interview (of sorts) with the former Australian Test cricket bowler Merv Hughes:

The harder you work through the easy times, the easier it becomes through the hard times. If you work hard at your basic training, the easier it is during the game situation.

That of course applies to any walk of life. It’s really easy to push yourself when the pressure’s on, but what about when it’s not?

What is art?

Can anyone declare a work to be art? Short answer of course is yes. However most people agree there’s a line between what can be rightfully called art and what really is crap. But who gets to decide where that line is. Personally, I draw that line such that a lot more of what is […]

Converting the technologically hesitant.

I wrote a reply to a piece on David Alison’s blog that I’d like to share the gist of. David was discussing how some people are resistant to technology.
This reminds me of 20 years ago when I was working for the police and we introduced computers to police stations. We made it optional to use them. So […]

Web design: A Flash-based website done right. Finally!

Just repeating what I wrote on The Google Cache about Adobe Flash and using it to make websites:
I used to hate Flash-based websites. Hmmm? Actually, I still do. I’d never seen a Flash-based site that made me want to make one. Instead, they all turned me off Flash. They all seem to be about showing […]

Cricket: IPL Twenty20 fun but lacking

I’m really enjoying the IPL Twenty20 cricket in India at the moment. But I have a gnawing feeling of something missing.
Test cricket, the longer form of the game, and the pre-eminent form, allows the game to develop over days. It builds and enthralls.
Too much Twenty20 is like having dessert only at every meal. It sounds […]

Graphic design: Knowing when to lead.

A bit of a learning experience today.
As graphic design students, we submitted designs for a logo for a local organization. However, they didn’t really know what they were looking for, so needed us to lead, which we didn’t. So a fairly broad and open brief.
They’ve narrowed it down to three, but again, not knowing what […]

AFL: Drawn games are a curse.

Dunno what it’s like in other sports, but in the AFL, a drawn game is a curse.
Since 2005, teams featuring in a draw have only won 2 out a possible 16 games the following week.
Now the easy answer is that it’s a close, hard game, so it’s physically taken something out of the players.
But no. […]

IE holds back progress

You know, part of me still hesitates to recommend a Mac simply because so many websites are still developed by narrow-minded MS-bots who make their sites IE only.
It seems to be a problem more for Apple’s Safari than Firefox, so at least we can use FF to get around a few more. But there’s still […]

Cold and wet: Perfect weather!

What a lovely day. Wet and cold (about 10C). Perfect for grabbing a hot cup of soup, and finding a warm and cozy place to work.
Seriously, I love it!

Grand Theft Auto 4 Cheats? You’re kiddin?!

Grand Theft Auto 4 (or GTA IV if you like) has barely had a chance to burn rubber across the game store shelves and the hottest search item on Google is for cheats! Give it a rest! Go play the game first. Man!
The New York Times said, “Grand Theft Auto IV is a violent, intelligent, […]
