Computers were meant to be time savers. And they are. You can do heaps more with a computer than without. 25 years ago, offices had typing pools. Nowadays most people, even managers and executives, type their own letters - at least in first draft.

And therein is the problem computers have created.

Computers have enabled us to take on what used to be other people’s jobs. A great cost saving to business, but to get this extra work done has meant working longer hours.

One person is now able to do the work of two in less time. So where two people worked 80 hours to get the work done, now one person can do it in 50 hours.

And hence the average office worker is working up to 10 hours a week extra unpaid overtime.

Thank you computers.

I rarely see one that catches my eye, but this one sure did. It is Visual Thesaurus.Doesn’t sound catchy yet.

There’s been silly talk around the place that Apple’s new iMovie, which has a revolutionary new editing interface but is missing many important features of its predecessor, is in fact a sneaky plot by Apple to force people who want to make movies on Macs to buy Final Cut Express.This is nonsense.

Lately with the resurgence of the Mac, sites are springing up, and articles are being written on switching. To make life easier for switchers, I am going to collate them on this page as I come across them.

Fascinating how Visicalc, the first spreadsheet was a killer app. Lotus 123 was a killer app, Excel again was a killer app (albeit helped by being part of MS Office suite).Now we find ourselves in 2007 and Apple has revolutionized spreadsheets with its new Numbers application, part of its iWork productivity suite, that includes Keynote for presentations, and PAges for word processing and desktop publishing.

Joined Facebook today coz everyone - especially Robert Scoble - www.scobleizer.com - keeps talking about it…. Admittedly, that was friends already on Facebook.Then it proposes other ways to make friends on Facebook, such as networking.

Further to my previous post about my work for a commercial website, I was investigating content management systems. I have been happy with Wordpress; however have found it not ideal for the average person who just wants to update web pages occasionally.

Much to my surprise, I discovered yesterday that my blogs are doing quite nicely all things considered. This is significant as I have posted less than monthly for most of the last year.It’s sort of a kick in the groin coz I alosalsonk, sheesh!

Have spent the last three days trying to get my student edition of Adobe Creative Suite registered. Five emails from two different email accounts with relevant documentation attached failed to arrive at Adobe.Eventually it seems the problem might be Adobe limiting emails with attachments.

The Nintendo Wii lets you password protect areas you don’t want other people to access. Great, fantastic idea.
